Alex Birkenstock

For the busy folks, here’s a quick bullet point version of my CV. Below, you’ll find a brief overview of my career and, further down, some personal tidbits to help you get to know the person behind the designer. Enjoy!

My Life so Far

A Creative Foundation

From an early age, my life has been a blend of creativity and diverse experiences. From a very young age my Mom would read to me and on long walks I’d chew my Dads ear off, retelling stories I’ve come up with. My Waldorf school education nurtured my imagination and critical thinking. Despite some scholastic challenges due to dyslexia, my love for stories, books and languages flourished. An exchange year in the Rocky Mountains of Gooding, Idaho, expanded my cultural horizons and deepened my appreciation for all three of those interests. My experiences there have become the bedrock of my creative strengths and adaptability.

Academic Adventures in Storytelling

My academic journey started with a year-long course in directing, where I sharpened my storytelling and visual narrative skills. I then pursued studies in communication design and illustration, merging creativity with practical design techniques like the design thinking method. One of my proudest achievements was launching "Schweinehund," an illustration-based magazine exploring the theme of desire. Leading the visual identity and production, I discovered the power of collaboration and storytelling through design. This project not only fulfilled my creative ambitions but also earned several awards, highlighting the impact of our work.

Building Brands with Emotion

Creating Uphor, my first organization, marked a significant milestone. This collaborative fiction and worldbuilding project, inspired by a universe I imagined as a child, allowed me to simplify complex concepts and communicate them effectively.

Besides that, as a freelance content producer, I crafted a wide range of content, from social media videos to storytelling and design workshops. Concurrently, I worked on various websites, enhancing my technical skills and deepening my understanding of user experience. Completing a UX Bootcamp refined my ability to design user-centric experiences. This training has been crucial in my work on brand identities and websites, where I focus on creating emotion-driven stories that resonate deeply with audiences.

Design Thinking

I fully embrace the design thinking method in my process. It starts with getting to know the users through detailed research and creating lively personas that capture their needs. Then, I dive into defining core problems and brainstorming creative solutions.

I bring ideas to life with wireframes and interactive prototypes. Usability testing and feedback are crucial steps, helping me fine-tune and iterate the designs. This approach ensures my work is user-centered, innovative, and a joy to interact with.

Cooking

Beyond my love for narratives, tied to my professional ambitions, my biggest passion in life is food. Nothing grounds me more than stepping into the kitchen, putting on my apron, and prepping a meal. The act of working with my hands to create something delicious is immensely satisfying.

Beyond my daily cooking rituals, I love making my own pasta, fermenting and pickling vegetables, and recently, experimenting with homemade miso.Cooking allows me to unwind and sparks my creativity, bringing a sense of accomplishment and joy into my life. Ask me about my favorite recipes and my extensive pepper collection! But I still use other narrative media as a personal outlet.

A (somewhat personal) note on AI:

In the spirit of full transparency, I want to share that I used AI for various aspects of this website, mainly to provide a professional structure to the text and (being dyslexic) as a proofreader.
AI has quickly become an integral part of my design process, enhancing creativity and efficiency.

By openly discussing it, I aim to set an example of transparency, destigmatizing the subject and to foster a deeper understanding and trust with my audience.
